Understanding Waterproof Keyboard Ratings: The IP Standard
When selecting industrial or spill-resistant keyboards, you will frequently encounter an "IP" rating (e.g., IP65, IP68). This stands for Ingress Protection, an international standard used to classify the degree of protection an enclosure provides against solid objects (like dust) and liquids (like water).
The rating follows the format IPXY:
• X (First Digit): Represents resistance to solid objects, ranging from 0 to 6. A "6" indicates the device is dust-tight, providing total protection against dust ingress.
• Y (Second Digit): Represents liquid resistance, ranging from 0 to 9.
Common Keyboard Ratings:
• IP65: Dust-tight and protected against low-pressure water jets. This is the standard for most heavy-duty industrial keyboards found in factories.
• IP67: Dust-tight and can withstand temporary immersion in water (up to 1 meter for 30 minutes). It is highly common in medical settings where equipment must be cleaned or disinfected frequently.
• IP68: The gold standard. Fully dust-tight and capable of continuous, deeper immersion.
Understanding these ratings is essential. While "water-resistant" is a vague marketing term, an official IP rating provides a verified guarantee of the keyboard's durability, ensuring your hardware remains functional despite spills, wash-downs, or harsh environmental contaminants.
